DescriptionA beautifully rendered commission from Tillie Walden, the subject matter of which is from my favorite work of hers, On A Sunbeam.Originally released as a webcomic in the Fall of 2016 and put out serially until spring 2017, First Second Books adapted the story into a graphic novel released in October 2018. This illustration is so evocative of Walden’s magical blending within On A Sunbeam of science fiction, fantasy & queer characters (the romance between Mia & Grace particularly touched me) in a story that features intergalactic colonization via fish-like spaceships, interwoven timelines, first loves, middle-school drama, adventure & friendships. Commissions can be risky as the high expectations involved with pursuing them are rarely met. But in this case, Tille FAR exceeded mine. And for that, I am very grateful. Thanks to Sean Watkins of Athenaeum Comic Art for helping make this happen! Social/Sharing |

Walden is a writer/artist that moves the medium into new directions and most of it is forward by branching into meaningful stories and subjects. This piece tells a story in itself with a journey to a place that may not exist.

Congratulations! This is an absolutely amazing piece. It really evokes the incredible feelings of otherworldliness and richness that are in "On a Sunbeam" (also my favorite work of hers).
