Description

"Battle of Midway" by Paul S. Newman. October-December 1963.

The Japanese mistakenly conclude that the Doolittle raid was launched from Midway Island. The bombers actually took off from a US carrier. Japan sends a naval task force to destroy the US base on the island.

Back of the front cover opposite this page is a story about the battle for Monte Cassino.

Note: I initially thought Sam was wildly inaccurate in giving the B-25s eight machine guns in the front, albeit to heighten the action and grab the reader's attention. Doolittle B-25s weren't armed in this fashion, being designed to have a single gun in the front bubble. His depictions of military equipment are usually accurate.

I was surprised to find, however, that he was accurate about some B-25s during the war. According to Britannica, "a considerable number (of B-25s) had the Plexiglas nose for bomb aiming replaced with a 'solid' nose mounting heavy forward-firing armament for ground strafing and for flak suppression during attacks on enemy shipping. In these cases the most common forward-firing armament was the 0.50-inch machine guns, eight being the typical number."
