Description

Last of 3 BP posts today and this is a BIG one for me! Picked it up from Jason Schachter of Essential Sequential. Been off CAF for awhile but am back and being a Panther fan, wanted to post some Panther art after the recent solo film release.

This is a page from Don McGregor’s renowned run on Jungle Action featuring BP called "Panther's Rage". Though not technically BP’s first solo series...it really is. Jungle Action showcased BP's first solo story and was Marvel’s first graphic novel. The first 3 issues of the run were by Rich Buckler and most of the rest was by Billy Graham (whom I’m also looking for a page from!). A sweet piece of history here, particularly now, as this is the issue after Erik Killmonger debuted.

As far as the art...can’t get much better than an all out Panther action page! BP in serious trouble here then turns the tables on Killmonger henchman Venomm. Yep, that’s Venomm with 2 M’s. Some classic storytelling here and the kicker for me was that last panel - just a great headshot of BP with a determined look as well as the matching dialogue. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention inker extraordinaire Klaus Janson’s contribution...so there you go!

I don’t pick up art very often that was published before my childhood, and this definitely fits that category of “before my time”. But there clearly are exceptions :) I couldn’t pass up such a nice page from such a historically important run of one of my favorite characters, 2nd if I had to rank. Thanks for looking, all, and also a thanks to Don/Rich/Klaus and Co. for starting off BP’s first solo story right!

This is a super cool page by an outstanding artist inked by another legend. Do yourself a favor and keep this page for a life time. Interest in BP has exploded because of the movie. People that normally wouldn't want a page like this are now drooling. But once you own something this cool cherish and enjoy it. Beyond words really how good this page is.

Appreciate the comment and recommendation, Michael!  I plan on holding on to this one for a LONG time, especially, to your point, how difficult it's becoming to get these kinds of pages.  There's just not much of it out there, let alone what's actually available to pick up.  And the film has clearly increased the popularity of the character, which is great.  So, definitely feel lucky to have picked up such a nice example!  Thanks, all, for the comments!

I've yet to read Panther's Rage, even though I've always been curious about it. But I have the trade on my Amazon wish list, just to see if seeing it there constantly finally pushes me over the edge. It hasn't yet, but every time I see someone post a page like this one, I feel myself leaning closer to that edge! Great stuff, man!

We've only got so much time to read so I hear you on not pulling the trigger just yet, Ruben.  I'd of course, recommend it - I think you'll dig it.  It's a BIG story so will take you a little time to get through but it'll be time well spent IMO!  And if you enjoyed the film at all it's cool to see some of that source material they used.  Thanks for the comment!

If you are gonna buy pre personal nostalgia, you couldnt pick a better run of pages.

Reading this page had me perched on the edge of my seat!  That's some majorly gripping action and exciting story-telling in just a handful of panels.

While it may read a little differently today, "Panther's Rage" was something different and special in 1973 and it's nice to see a page from early in the run (or really any page from this run). Admittedly, it's Billy Graham that comes to mind first when I think of this series, but Buckler & Janson got it off to a good start. Janson's inks, whether here or on Deathlock, always brought out the best in Buckler's art, which, as can be seen here on this page, was quite dynamic when the action got going.

Great add, Timothy, and I'd agree all the way around!  Always nice to get a little history with the comments!  Thanks!
