DescriptionMy wife and I just had our second child and first daughter and have been happily busy with that but as I’ve been feeling particularly appreciative lately as a result, I wanted to post a piece where the appreciation factor is super high, so here you go!“Killmonger is -- here!” And what an entrance! OK, CAFers, I know I’ve said in the past that a number of pieces were big gets for me, and they were, but this is absolutely up there – a HUGE get – one of those pieces you don’t even know exists let alone think about actually owning. I’ll start off with a sincere thanks to Klaus Janson and his dealer Jason Schachter for giving yours truly the tremendous opportunity of acquiring such an awesome work. As a big Black Panther (BP) fan, you’d be hard pressed to do much better in terms of pure illustration and historical significance. I feel like I’ve gotta list this out: - Jungle Action #6 is the very first solo BP story (BP took over Jungle Action with issue #5 but that was a reprint of Avengers #62) - This issue is the start of Don McGregor’s renowned BP story, titled Panther’s Rage, which was a pioneering arc for modern graphic storytelling - This issue includes the first appearance of Erik Killmonger - THIS page features the actual arrival of Killmonger - This issue is renowned inker Klaus Janson’s first credited comics work, which he did confirm for me at a recent con. He also talks about it in this YouTube video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffM-hV-FI5A. Check it out starting 2:55 in - Most importantly, a great looking piece of art that’s right up my alley! A lot of checks there but gotta elaborate on that last one. Killmonger was designed to be a dangerous, hulking figure and to be physically imposing when paired up against T’Challa and that’s clearly communicated with this intro! Love the poses of both characters (BP just barely dodging the strike!) and the inks are top notch, especially in where Janson chooses to use a thinner vs. heavier line. Got Killmonger’s pet Preyy in the background, that sound effect lettering, a little zipatone…this one’s got it all, as they say! Michael B. Jordan’s turn as Killmonger in the BP film was really impressive and it’s just cool to have that character’s first ever appearance in the Marvel U! N’Jadaka (Killmonger’s Wakandan name) did die at the end of Panther’s Rage, but has been resurrected a number of times, no doubt due to him being such an ideal adversary to T’Challa. And, I think, an adversary T’Challa has yet to actually defeat one on one! So happy and humbled as a fan and collector to own this piece. Thanks, all, for looking – I wish you the same fortune, luck, whatever you want to call it, in your collecting efforts! Social/Sharing |

K, I am speechless. A stupendous splash - Black Panther vs: Killmonger! wow, it can't get any better than this. Killmonger almost stole the BP movie, I was almost rooting for him. Buckler/Janson - an art collaboration made in heaven! You have done well, my friend.

Thanks, Nick - appreciate that coming from such a big BP fan, particularly of the classic McGregor run. And thanks, all, for your comments - it’s evident to those who know me or look at my gallery from time to time that this is a pretty special pick up!

Really great write-up and even a greater page. What a clean, dynamic, and powerful page. That's the way to introduce a super-villain. Big congrats, I love it!

Thanks, Lee! It is kind of a long write-up but came pretty easy. I do like to spell out what I like about pieces I get, especially big ones like this. It’s fun for me and I hope CAFers enjoy reading ‘em too. Appreciate the comment!

BING BANG BOOM...PTUNCH! Thought I’d throw in the sound effect from the page there, Michael! I also think I’m tapped out on words...I should be with that description. Well...I’m sure something will come to me later :) Thanks for the great comment and all for chiming in on this beaut!

Wow! I have been reading comics for close to 40 years, but I only just read the "Panther's Rage" story when it came out as a Marvel Masterworks volume a couple years back. Great page from a great story!

That is one sweet Bronze Age Marvel splash. Buckler & Janson (and Killmonger) really swung for the fences when they drew & inked this one.

This one hits the Four Rights: right page, right collector, right time, right on! It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings. Congrats, this is major!

Definitely a significant piece. Congrats! Killmonger is so frustrating to me because this character is teeming with potential but no writer has really been able to make the character fly. The lack of a signature supervillain costume/mask doesn't help...

It's interesting, N F, I kinda go back and forth on this. Totally see what you're saying as far as no costume/mask but other part of me thinks that that's the character's...character, lol. "I don't need a mask, costume, none of that!" That kind of thing. But yes, I agree the potential's there. There have been some great stories with him, but he hasn't reached next tier status. Foundation is there. We shall see! Appreciate your comment and glad you like the piece!
