DescriptionThere are a few things in collecting original comic art that simply had to be within my collection. This is definitely one of those! I have marveled over the printed magazines since first seeing them as a sixteen-year-old fan.The pairing of the great John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala is second to none for me. Here is a page from early in their collaboration. Savage Sword of Conan #12 published in June 1976. It features all the beautiful inking of Alcala working to perfection the use of light and shadow. Coupled with the classical pencils of Buscema. (Even a panel of the soon to be rescued Princess Corma.) Making what could be a throw-away page in the story by lesser talents into high art from this legendary pair. So thrilled to finally add an example of this run. Always on the look out for any page from my favorite SSOC issue #4 by Buscema/Alcala. This will serve quite well until that happens. No drawing on the back of the board, but it does contain a stamp from "Supersnipe" the famous comic art store who seems to have bought this first on July 20, 1976. Then sold it for $15.00? Would love to know the history of this gem after that if perhaps anyone reading this owned it for a time. Just let me know! Social/Sharing |

I have loved John Buscema's work my entire life, but so too have I always loved Alcala's embellishing and I have to say that Alfredo gets the majority of the credit here. The textures that make the wooden beams and stone walls feel so solid and lifelike, not to mention give the page so much atmosphere you can smellit, is all due to the incredibly illustrative inking done by Alcala. This is a fabulous example of what is known as a masterpiece of comic book illustration, full stop.

Thanks Ruben.
We hear how quickly Alfredo worked and it is astounding that the stories containing these detailed embellishments were so many pages long. All while never missing a detail within the work.
The first issues of SSOC had a very Voltar look to them. Of which Alcala could indeed take all the credit for!

In 1974, $1 was a lot to spend on a comic/mag.
The team of Buscema/Alcala made sure everyone got their money's worth!

I love the textures of Alcala's inks; it feels like he weaves his inks like fabrique. This page is quite amazing.

Fabulous work by Alcala. This must look even better in person.
