DescriptionGenerations of outstanding artists have studied the approach to figure drawing pioneered by Frank Reilly at the Art Students League in the early 20th Century. Jeff Watts carries on this tradition, and he has created my favorite life drawings of all time. Jeff is a great friend who has taught hundreds (thousands?) of artists in all aspects of traditional drawing and painting at his Atelier in the San Diego area, and he and his fellow instructors have generated an enormous trove of virtual course material. So if you want to improve your drawing and painting skills, check out his online courses and/or make a pilgrimage to his Atelier. Here's a lovely 18"x24" life drawing Jeff did back in the 90s. So many subtleties in this, such as the delicate bamboo leaf design in the pillow indicated with a few deft strokes of the eraser. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

Watts captures with line and shading what has been divinely designed. The carpentry on those legs are so smooth and sturdy that you can't help to think that he knew what he was doing on the rest of the drawing .

An eye-catching piece for sure! It would be very nice to hang this drawing right next to the Conan one.

Love Watts! Me er considered that his life drawings would be available somewhere. Were you ever a student at his atelier?

Yeah, in a previous life I studied figure drawing at Watts Atelier, and even taught there briefly. I picked up some of these in class, and some I bought from Jeff around the same time. There isn't a huge market for charcoal pencil life drawings on newsprint lol, but it's among my favorite art forms. For me, there's no greater pleasure than drawng the figure from life surrounded by highly skilled art students all focused on capturing fleeting beauty

Stunning. I love how he handled the shadows. So much energy to the piece and the line work feels so naturalistic. Jeff really is a master draftsman and it shows. Beautiul figure drawing.
