DescriptionAmazing Spider-Man Annual #16 Pg. 20Pencils by John Romita Jr. Inks by John Romita Sr. Written by Roger Stern Lettered by Jim Novak 1st Appearance Monica Rambeau issue, as the All New All Different, Captain Marvel! On this page drawn by the father & son team up of The Romitas, and in her very first appearance and origin revealed issue, Monica Rambeau inadvertently discovers and uses two of her powers for the very first time! Two pages prior to this one in the issue (as part of the reveal of her origin within the issue), while undercover there is an explosion that bombards Monica with extra-dimensional energies. A huge jolt/streak of energy blasts off into the sky and lands on a nearby wharf, and that energy packet congeals back into her human form. Monica "wakes up" and does not realize what has occurred and decides she needs to get inside this building with a locked door to try and get help for those on Roxxon Oil Tower #25 where the explosion occurred. That is where this page begins. In the top panel Monica feels an "eerie, shimmering sensation...she feels light, airy, the door no longer feels so hard beneath her hand...and when she straightens up..." In the 2nd panel, she is all of a sudden inside without realizing it. This is her first use of one of her key powers of "Intangibility", ie she can phase through solid matter and certain energy fields depending on their wavelengths. In the subsequent panels, Monica decides to "radio for help" with a mayday. Little does she realize that the back of the radio is unplugged to power and the cables are cut, so this is where another one of her powers comes into play for the first time ever as Monica can tap into any energy form within the electromagnetic spectrum, that includes radio waves as well. She successfully reaches someone on a nearby ship. I am beyond happy to be the owner of this important page in Marvel Comics history and for the character of Monica Rambeau (also known as Captain Marvel, Photon, Pulsar, and currently known as Spectrum in Marvel Comics present day canon). With her recent live action debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) played by actress Teyonah Parris in the massively successful and popular Disney Plus streaming series WandaVision, and a confirmed appearance in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2 film...she is more popular than ever before, and the future is certainly bright for this character! Nice page! To be honest, I wasn't familiar with the character until WondaVision, but looked her up and started reading some of her back story issues. Really cool to get an origin page!

Thank you James! I was familiar with her prior to the show and was a fan, mainly from the more modern books (as Spectrum), but the WandaVision show sure did put her in an entirely new stratosphere as far as general character awareness, and led me to go back and read a lot of her older apperances as Captain Marvel. The story behind how I found this page is a pretty good one too but I didn't want the description to be any lenghtier than it already was lol. Thanks for the comment bro!!

Great page--love how much texture John Romita Sr added in the inks; something very specail about seeing father and son work together, particularly to debut such a cool (and now more relevant than ever) character. Congrats!

thank you Jeremy, well said!! This is my first father & son Romita team up page, def something special about that. And I love that it happened in a Spider-Man book (i'm a big Spidey guy) even though Peter isn't on this page he is in the issue and interacts with Monica (as Captain Marvel) etc. in the storyline. Definately stoked to have this in the collection. Thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it when I get feedback from other collectors!

My favorite of all of the characters to use the name "Captain Marvel." She was a core member of the Avengers when I started reading comics, so I'm still annoyed to this day that Carol Danvers now uses the name instead of Monica. Huge congrats on having a page from a historical issue!
