DescriptionPosting another Hostess ad from my collection. This is one of the rare Spider-man features. This ad is from 1980 with art by Mike Esposito.Featuring the birth page AND first appearance of Spider-man's greatest foes -"The Bikers"! Yes, you read that right -The Bikers! This is history you're looking at. The Green Goblin- who cares? Mysterio? He's just a dumb looking guy with a flamboyant costume and a bubble on his head. Venom - who's that? These guys have the unbelievable superpower of being able to ride motorcycles! Rumor also has it that they're soon to be featured in the background of some upcoming Marvel movie. Offer me millions now before it's too late. Always looking for more of these ads. Thanks Mike! Social/Sharing |

A delicious treat of artwork with Hostess courting the young boys demographic with an irresistable self contained comic commercial! Them bikers kind of look like the notorious duo of Stan and Roy.

Great catch on the Stan and Roy likeness Marcus. I always thought that the characters had a very odd look for a biker gang. Thanks for the comment!

It's amazing you managed to find not just the birth page, but the insemination page of the BikersVerse.

Oh Glen, if you only knew what you've started..... Now off to continue my search for the "twinkle in the writer's eye" BikersVerse page.

As a former ad man myself, I really enjoy ads like this one. How fun is it to create ads for a comic book that look and sound like the comic? This one, by industry stalwart Mike Esposito, is absolutely charming. Spider-Man, being threatened by Motorcycle hoodlums doesn't bother to beat them up or pull them off their bikes with his webbing. No, he simply tosses out Twinkies and they stop menacing him immediately. Wonder if that trick would work with Doc Ock? Or the Green Goblin? Venom?
