DescriptionIt's pretty rare to find art from Barry's run on the "Threeboot" Legion for sale anywhere, so I was delighted when Anthony Snyder started listing some of Barry's prelims for various pages! From what I've seen, I get the feeling Barry does a lot of preliminary work before ever starting to draw the finished, published page, and it's fun to get to own a step in the larger process! This one here is small - maybe 6 by 9 - and done on vellum. It's actually from one of my favourite Threeboot issues, where Brainiac 5 finally confronts the shadowy villain the Legion's been chasing after - a man who can remove any memory of himself from the people and electronic devices he interacts with. He confronted Brainy in a previous issue to gloat, erased all traces of the conversation from his memory, and has since gone on to infect Brainy's people, the Coluans, with an intelligence-degenerating disease (which is why Brainy's clearly not very happy in the first panel, there).Even as a prelim, Barry's mastery of facial expressions shines through here. There's also a fantastic shot of Light Lass, using her antigravity powers to great effect and keeping Lemnos from being able to escape and wipe himself from everyone's memories. Social/Sharing |

I love this run. Many of the pages had three lives: large pencil version, small vellum version, and full size ink version.

Hey, thank you for the extra info! I have some other prelims for this run, some large, and some small. Now I know that those were the main two prelim formats!

very cool pickup, the level of detail Kitson put into a prelim such as this is pretty impressive! he must have a real sense of confidence when finally tackling the final published page.

Most of the creativity is in these prelims as Kitson redraws onto the regular bristol board that cleans up the rawness and maybe washes out some of the desperation we see here. You can see why the colorist would alter panel 2 to make it not blend into panel 3.

I do so appreciate your insights, Marcus! :) I agree that the expressions in the prelim here feel a bit more intense compared to the published page (but I sure do hope I come across the published page someday, so I can compare them in person!).
