DescriptionDykes to Watch Out For (DTWOF) was a weekly comic strip by Alison Bechdel that ran from 1983 to 2008. It was one of the earliest ongoing representations of lesbians in popular culture and chronicled the lives, loves, and politics of a diverse group of characters living in a medium-sized city in the United States (thought to be Minneapolis). It featured both humorous soap opera storylines and biting topical commentary. According to Bechdel, her strip was "half op-ed column and half endless, serialized Victorian novel". The strip was one of the most successful and longest-running queer comic strips with the characters aging in real-time throughout the run.For those interested, there have been numerous collected editions of DTWOF, but ‘The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For’, published in 2008, compiled most but not all the strips that had ever been published under the title. It included a 12-page introduction in which Bechdel reflected on her time drawing the strip. The book won the Ferro-Grumley Award for LGBT fiction in 2009. Special thanks to Sean Watkins of Athenaeum Comic Art for helping this great DTWOF example find a home in my collection! Social/Sharing |

Great pickup pair, Chris! Thanks for posting. I tried to buy a Fun Home page a number of years ago but couldn't swing it.

Wow, Chris, you get my nomination for "Most Diverse and Quirky Comic Art Collection." Dykes to Watch Out For is not the usual material we see in Comic Art Fans, but maybe it should be. Alison Bechdel's long running strip was a unique and special contribution to LGBT fiction. This particular example is just classic, with the two women each telling their families about a pregnancy with different reactions by each family. Alison's work is very open and honest in its portrayal of lesbian culture. Another interesting and impressive addtion to your fabulous comic art collection.
