DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - Sensation Comics Special #1, teaming Wonder Woman with the All-Star Squadron, adapted by Bambos Georgiou from Alan Davis' cover to Adventures OF The Outsiders #34.(Yes, Sensation Comics. I've long thought that DC missed a trick by not using that title as a Wonder Woman team-up book - since both Batman and Superman already had their own team-up titles - and this was the perfect opportunity for me to weave it into Golden Age team-Up continuity.) Spring 1945 - and as seen in The Brave & The Bold Special #1, Batman and several of his fellow heroes have been kidnapped by Axis forces, led by the Dragon King! When Liberty Belle - who had been unable to react to Miss America's warning message since she was on the air as radio broadcaster Libby Lawrence - arrives at the Perisphere, she finds evidence of a struggle, and her fellow All-Stars Robotman and Firebrand already present. After analysing samples of the air inside the team's headquarters, Robotman identifies a powerful gas which had been used to subdue the heroes who had been present, but there is no indication of which members were gassed or what has happened to them! As Belle is about to use the Squadron's technology (first seen in issue #42 of their comic) to locate the team's members, Wonder Woman's invisible plane lands outside the Perisphere - and the Amazing Amazon brings dire news! While in Washington DC, she discovered that many members of Uncle Sam's Freedom Fighters were missing, and evidence suggested that they had also been kidnapped. Alongside Plastic Man, who had also been on the hunt for the missing heroes, she raced to New York to seek the aid of her team-mates, as it now seems that dire forces are targeting all of America's heroes! When it becomes apparent that large numbers of the Squadron's membership are not responding to their communication devices, the five heroes try and map out a plan of action - but their deliverations are interrupted by the arrival of Aquaman, making a rare visit to the Perisphere, who is shocked to discover that so many of the team seem to have vanished! As he joins the others, Robotman's ultra-sensitive earpieces pick up an almost inaudible sound, and he turns... ... only to be sent crashing into the Perisphere's walls, apparently by a mighty blow - but there is no-one present who could have delivered such a punch! At the same time, Aquaman is attacked by an invisible force, and Wonder Woman is restrained by an unseen foe! At Liberty Belle's instruction, Firebrand raises a wall of flame, and the heat from it disrupts the devices which are rendering invisible their attackers - Axis Amerika members Ubermensch, Gudra and the Sea-Wolf, as well as Nazi villains Night and Fog! Now visible, the villains regroup and launch a further attack, with Fog choking Firebrand and Aquaman, while Ubermensch batters Wonder Woman, Night blinds Plastic Man, Gudra's spear slices through Robotman's metal legs, sending him to the floor, and Sea-Wolf's claws narrowly miss severely injuring Liberty Belle! With Robotman diabled, Gudra knocks out Aquaman and joins Ubermensch in battling Wonder Woman, and as Firebrand falls, Fog turns his attention to aiding Night in overcoming Plastic Man. Liberty Belle is able to knock down Sea-Wolf, and sprints to the side of the Amazing Amazon - but when Night and Fog dispose of Plastic Man and also join the battle against the two heroines, Belle is quickly overcome. Now standing alone, Wonder Woman is defiant as Sea-Wolf recovers and stands alongside his fellow villains - and even the strength of the princess of Paradise Island cannot prevail for long against five antagonists, and she is overcome by the villains, and her wrists chained by Ubermensch, rendering her powerless! With all six heroes out of action, the villains report in to their leader - the Dragon King - that they have succeded in their mission and will shortly bring the fallen All-Stars to the villains' hidden headquarters, and then the final phase of their plan can go into effect! To be continued, in DC Comics Presents Special #1 - coming soon! Social/Sharing |
