DescriptionStunning page (p14) from one of my favorite Don Rosa treasure-hunt stories, “The Quest for Kalevala” (1999), which is based upon the finish national epos the “Kalevala”...for more information please visit Matti Eronen’s wonderful CAF gallery...This is the beginning of the sequence where Scrooge & Donald travel to the underworld (Tuonela) to retrieve the missing part of the Sampo. This page marks the first appearance of Death (Tuoni)…Disney comics don’t get much scarier than this… :-) As far as I know this is the only Don Rosa (original art) story that is not lettered in English (some stories are not lettered at all), but in finish (by the original finish letterer). As it was first published in Finland and is based upon their national Epos, this seems only fitting. Social/Sharing |

The illustrative work by Rosa here was great proof that he was the greatest Duck artist of his generation. They never caught on with comic audiences in the US because Disney didn't put money in the domestic publishing or even made the collections a big deal, so he gets a lot more recognition overseas where he is revered.
