Description

This has an interesting backstory. After corresponding with artist Matt Smith, discovered that the published cover was created digitally, but Matt was never totally happy with the angle of the hammer. So, he printed out the digital pencils in light blue on bristol board, made penciled changes over that, and then inked the final with pens and brushes. As a result, I suppose this could be considered a recreation or "version 2.0" but which is fully endorsed by the artist, since the original pencils and inks don't exist.

Either way, I'm happy to add this cool piece to my collection. Lots of menacing details in the various ghoulish characters surrounding Hellboy, who appears to be leaping out of an antique picture frame. Acquired in trade; thanks Justin!

The concept is solid with the frame adding a level of mystery and magic to the cover! Smith's inking in this recreation shows a lot of patience and dedication to the craft.
