Description

I’ve decided to begin populating a gallery featuring the commercial and illustration art of David Wright.

While best known as a comic strip artist, most notably for his creation of and eleven-year run on Carol Day in London’s Daily Mail, he was an accomplished commercial artist and illustrator well before that. More specifically, he was the pre-eminent British pin-up artist during World War II. His creations adorned the barracks of British soldiers and were unique & striking enough to come to be known as David Wright’s ‘lovelies’.

This Wright ‘lovely’ perfectly exemplifies the uniqueness of Wright’s presentation of fashion, glamour, beauty, and sensuality when depicting women. The art is dramatic and commands our attention…while showing the back of the female figure! This is a standard Wright convention, with his models often at leisure or caught in a moment. It’s an injection of quasi-voyeurism that generally heightens the visual temperature of his creations.

This piece, entitled ‘A Subject for Wishful Thinking’, was a pin-up included in the February 24, 1943, edition of Sketch Magazine. The Sketch was a British illustrated weekly journal that ran for almost 3,000 issues from 1893 to 1959. It was primarily a society magazine. I’ll talk more about Wright’s work for the Sketch in future updates.

This piece was also featured on page 50 of Terry Parker’s ‘Sirens: The Pin-Up Art of David Wright’, the definitive examination of David Wright’s commercial illustration and pin-up work. I’ll likely be referencing that book often in future David Wright gallery updates.

At first glance,  I thought...wow what a lovely piece of art. And then I read your description, in which you describe David Wright's naming of this series as his "lovelies". Stunningly beautiful piece that screams the word. Congratulations Chris...amazing score.

This is right up there with some of the great American pin-up artists of the era!

This is really lovely.  Just the pose is incredibly captivating.  I love the positioning of her arms and hands as she gathers her hair to expose all that exquisite bare skin on her neck, shoulders, and back.  The choice to have her back turned was brilliant.  I love the random yet perfect lay of the gown/dress/robe that seems to have slipped deliciously from her upper body.  The entire painting is a provocative mystery that makes the voice in your head scream, who IS this woman?

Lovely.  Nice to see Wright's use of a different medium with similar excellent results.

The folds and colors of the gown are only matched by the white highlights of the back and arms.

Gorgeous!  Love how Wright's brush strokes for most of the specular reflections on the torso and arms go against the form while keeping the skin so smooth.  The anatomy is superb, and his choices with the shadows on the arms and the abstract background shape really work.  Even though they're mostly hidden, the legs are amazing

This is beautiful! Love the white lines, that remind me of JC Leyendecker's work even as its a much softer style. The colors, made me think of Rolf Armstrong when I first saw it. Huge Congrats!
