Description

This is a close up photograph of the top, and obviously the most important, of two watercolors given by George Herriman as part of a Christmas present in 1940. It shows Krazy plucking the petals of a red daisy with a few hearts above to show the Kat's amorous emotions. The watercolor is rather unusual in its color scheme, having a southwestern landscape that is rather less orange than usually found in Herriman desert landscape backgrounds. It is also unique, insofar as I can determine, in that it depicts only the main character of the strip. Herriman almost always painted Krazy, Ignatz, and Officer Pupp together in the watercolors he prepared as gifts for friends, relatives, and associates. The entire watercolor is very lightly splattered with metallic paint, which gives it a lively, subtilely sparking surface. Other examples of this technique are known, but It seems that the artist began gussying up his watercolors in this manner very late in his career.

I really don't know the significance of the letters on the hearts --E L L A. They could be the initials of the girls, but there are only three girls. Perhaps one went by both her first and middle name. If anyone has any thoughts on their meaning, I would appreciate hearing from you.
