DescriptionAlex Schomburg was contacted by Howard Lowery of Collectors Book Store in Hollywood, California in the mid-1970s with the thought of having him re-create some of his classic Timely comic book covers. After obtaining permission from Marvel, Schomburg initially did seven re-creations, 6 of which were sold through mail and telephone bid auctions -- the other one, All-Select No. 1 was the first painting Schomburg did, and he let Collectors Book Store buy it outright, without the need to have it auctioned. While the first three paintings that were auctioned sold for very respectable prices, the second group of three and the seventh auctioned painting sold for somewhat disappointing amounts. Since it took him so long to paint one of these, Schomburg was going to throw in the towel. But he was in the process of painting this, his ninth re-creation, and Howard Lowery convinced him to at least finish this one. He did, and it was the first of his paintings to be included in one of the regular Collectors' Showcase monthly auctions, which had just been started. Since it sold for the second highest amount of any of the eight paintings which had been sold though actions, Schomburg was willing to continue painting more. About 30 or 40 more paintings were done, all of which sold for more than this one. To my knowledge, however, Schomburg only outlined his figures in black /paint in the first nine pieces -- after that he would use flesh colored outlines in all the faces, hands, etc. In my opinion, the first nine paintings are by far the most striking due to the use of black outlines that set off the characters against the backgrounds. There were only four paintings of the first nine which featured all the main Timely characters, i.e., the Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, and Captain America. I like this one much more than the two of the others(All-Winners No. 12 and All-Select No. 1) and about the same as All-Winners No. 12. The two early Captain America re-creations, however, were absolutely fabulous, and I probably like the Captain America Mo. 37 the most of all the re-creations by Schomburg [or by any other comic book artist who did re-creations, for that matter. In my opinion, Alex Schomburg, C.C. Beck, and Dick Sprang produced the best comic book cover re-creations, primarily because they still had their eye-sight and steady hands, but also because they all used opaque tempera paint instead of pure watercolor. Watercolor cannot approximate the true appearance of a printed cover. Social/Sharing |
