Description

The fifth drawing for the set of still photographs used to promote Disney's short, The Flying Mouse, shows the mouse looking at his reflection in a pool of water. He is horrified to see the reason why none of the other flying creatures accepted him as a friend - a mouse with wings looks an awful lot like a bat!

The only publicity drawing from The Flying Mouse theatrical promotion art which I do not own (and have never seen in 35 years of searching for Disney publicity drawings) is probably the final one of the set. I suspect that it shows the flying mouse surrounded by a circle of bats, much like the illustration drawn for the cover of a piece of sheet music based on a song in the cartoon (You'r Nothin' But a Nothin'), and one of the six illustrations for the Flying Mouse Good Housekeeping page (for which none of the pencil art seems to exist, at least outside the Disney Studio). This critical moment is arguably the climax of the animated short, since the horror of the little mouse upon seeing his closest cousins is what causes him to regret his wish for wings, resulting in his return to his natural state (thanks to the same fairy who granted his wish originally) and his being content to be the way he was born, even if he could not fly. This theme of acceptance of oneself is found in many Disney shorts and features.
