DescriptionOn the right is a rare animation cel Jack Tar, the hero of the December 1935 Silly Symphony, Broken Toys -- the only cel I have ever seen of the character. To the far left is an animation drawing of the same character, with short hair, as in the cel. In the middle is a preliminary drrawing by Tom Wood for a watercolor of the character used in the Broken Toys Good Housekeeping page. In the Good Housekeeping art, Jack has a big shock of red hair. These originals, along with the publicity drawings from Broken Toys posted in this section, demonstrate that the Good Housekeeping art was done first, since Jack only has longer, red hair in that artwork. Next came the publicity drawings for still photographs and a poster, which have the same short black hair as in the final version of the character (as seen in the cel). It is possible that the animation art and the non-Good Housekeeping publicity art were done at about the same time.Social/Sharing |
