DescriptionThis cover has eluded me twice as other pieces where a bigger priority.I have now paid for that error in a higher price but happy I finally have this in my collection. I am actually a fan of Devil Slayer and as all know I love Starlin's work so I was planning on seeking this out and here it shows up on CL. Color me happy! 8 ) Now I need to work on a Defenders Nowlan cover and a Mignola one. Here is what CL says: Primary Artist Name: JIM STARLIN Year: 1982 Dimensions: The art has an image area of approximately 10" x 15". End Date: 3/3/2020 11:07:30 PM ComicLink Comments: Jim Starlin rarely drew covers for Marvel in the late 1970s and early 1980s that he both pencilled and inked, but here is an opportunity to bid on one where he did both. It's the cover to Defenders #110 featuring the newer (at the time) member Devil-Slayer battling the spirit of his dead friend Ira "Sunshine" Gross. Starlin has long been considered to be Marvel's "Cosmic Master" and this cover aligns with that reputation. About Devil-Slayer Devil-Slayer first appeared in a Deathlok story in the final issue of Marvel Spotlight, #33 (1977). He's a former Marine and later soldier of fortune and one time member of a demon cult who turned on the cult after obtaining the mystical Shadow Cloak and unlocking his own latent psychic abilities. Devil-Slayer was actually created as another character for another company, Demon Hunter, published by Atlas/Seaboard, the short lived company owned by former Marvel owner Martin Goodman. The Atlas/Seaboard titles only lasted for a few issues in 1975 until the entire line was shut down. Co-creators David Anthony Kraft and Rich Buckler tweaked the character a bit and brought him into Marvel, where he eventually joined the Defenders. About the Artist Artist Jim Starlin is the legendary creator chiefly responsible for the cosmic expansion of the Marvel Universe, starting with the introduction of Thanos and Drax in Iron Man #55 (1973). Starlin then continued his epic "Thanos Saga" with a great run on Captain Marvel #25-34 followed by his revival of Warlock in 1975. Two years later, Starlin returned to Marvel to complete the saga in Avengers Annual #7 and Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2, the issue featuring this page. Starlin would return to the characters of Thanos, Adam Warlock and Drax in the early 90s with the immensely popular Infinity Gauntlet series and its sequels, including Infinity War. The spirit of this work would later be adapted into the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy, the incredibly successful film that has spawned the even more successful sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The Starlin inspired films continued with the massively successful Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and its sequel, (2019), where Starlin's classic creation Thanos destroys half of all life in the Universe, just as he did in the Starlin-written comic book event series Infinity Gauntlet (1991).
