Description

Here's a two page story slated for Unreal Mind-Warp Funnies #0 (which came out in the 1980s). I didn't finish it in time, so it'll be included in UMWF #1 when we eventually publish that.

You might recognize that this is an homage to Steranko's classic "At the Stroke of Midnight" story. I was obsessed with Steranko as a teenager, so when I was eighteen I decided to make a story that also used a lot of tiny panels, but that retained the underground sensibility of the comix that my buddy Steve Hermann and I were making.

Steve was a huge Harvey comics fan, and one of our comix characters was Alfred the Dead Child, a satirical version of Casper the Friendly Ghost. To be honest, I think Steve swiped the idea from a Marie Severin "Casper the Dead Baby" story (from Not Brand Echh, maybe? I've never seen it, but I recall Marie saying somewhere that she met Alfred Harvey at a party and he didn't like it). In a further nod to poor taste, our Alfred/Alfie was named after Alfred Harvey. This is the origin story that explains how he became a friendly ghost in the first place.
