DescriptionBack in the mid-1990's, one of the artists that I worked with in Animation, was my good friend: Rob Walton. Like many of us, he was a frustrated comic-book artist.. Once during a weekend baseball game, he mentioned he'd love to start self-publishing, but didn't have the fund$ to get started..I told him I'd forward him an interest-free loan to get the ball rolling? I was as eager to see the finished product, as he was to start. Perhaps as a kind-of payback, he also gave me a lot of freelance work digitally coloring the covers to each of his RAGMOP comic-books! At that time, Mignola's popularity was quickly picking up steam. And he had a standing agreement with other indie artists, at the time: "You do a Pinup of my character.. And in trade, I'll draw a Pinup of your character(s).." Rob was smart enough to use the artwork as a cover, rather than publish it in the back of his book.. Because Mignola had riffed on Kubrick's 2001 and drawn tech gear in the spaceship reminiscent of Wally Wood.. He thought it'd be fun to create a kind-of "faux" EC WEIRD Science-Fantasy cover. And he gave me carte blanche to do so! Looking at the finished cover, I can't recall how I put the color together? I was new to Photoshop, trying every little trick that I could.. I can recall heavily referencing Frazetta's pen-and-ink work, to get the Milky Way galaxy behind the Kubrick 2001 slab in the background, looking just right! It was a very fun job. So having this Mignola rarity in my collection is something I'll always cherish.. Thanks for your generous gift, Rob! Social/Sharing |

Very cool! I picked this up as a print (from Rob's table?) probably before your cover saw print? I love how you explain all influences Mike used, that my young mind missed!

Interesting that he sold them as prints? I did not know that. Rob loved that Mignola had paid such close attention to the RAGMOP storyline. I know he was especially fond of the Dr. Seuss -type character Mignola drew in the inset panel at the bottom..

Dinos were pretty hot back in the mid 90's as well. Very cool he used the larger 90's DC board.

The Dinos were fun characters. They run thru the entirety of the 10-issue RAGMOP saga! Rob made a point of saying: "Mignola drew them more solidly than I ever could!.." Mignola was only 2 years into drawing HELLBOY. But I guess he must've had a lot of DC bristol board still hanging around!..

The black and white image is done so well. It really stands out when scrolling through the new art.

Yeah, the rim lighting Mignola indicated on the dinos really makes them pop off of the BG!

Excellent prime Mignola and (such) a nice change from the Hellboy-verse.

Yeah, I think Mignola was barely 2 years in on HELLBOY? He seemed a little more open to occasionally working on stuff outside his familiar milieu..
