Q&A with Rich Dannys

Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?

The Daniel Torres is not really my Grail piece. I don't know that I actually have a grail? But my favorite artist has always been Dave Stevens. I was lucky enough to get to know him (a bit) as a friend, and feel fortunate to have a couple of his ROCKETEER pages, in my collection!

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a 58 year-old collector, currently living in Oshawa, Ontario - Canada. I began drawing as a child, and never really stopped. After high school, I attended Sheridan College's "Classical Animation" program. And in 1989, began my career as a Layout Artist/Designer in the Animation business..

How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

While at Sheridan, my interests veered from Animation to Comic-Books. Eventually I dropped out of art college and began working at 'Andromeda Distribution' in Toronto. I began attending local conventions and also met a number of my favorite artists at store signing appearances. Eventually, I would get sketches there, and the seed of OA Collecting was planted!

How do you display/store your collection at home?

I only have the large Daniel Torres illustration framed and hanging in my upstairs hallway. All of my other acquisitions are filed and stored away in large Itoya portfolios..

What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

I collect by artist and not necessarily by nostalgia for a particular comic character/title.. I've been focused on Nowlan and Darrow mostly. But I'd really like to eventually get a nice Charles Burns piece. Other artists that currently interest me, are: Vince Roucher, Denis Sire, Liberatore, and Enki Bilal.

"The Killing Man" - PLAYBOY Dec '89
As an avid fan of both Film Noir and Crime Fiction, I fell in love with this image immediately after seeing it printed in 'The Art of DANIEL TORRES'. I've been a longtime fan of his work, but finding OA examples of his work, on North American shores, has been a real rarity.. I won this beauty at the recent Heritage Auction of Int'l Comic Art. The illustration was published in the December '89 of PLAYBOY, to accompany excerpts of Mickey Spillane's 12th MIKE HAMMER novel: "The Killing Man"..
