DescriptionAmazing as it might seem, as a European collector, for many years I have not realised the difference between large and standard size art. When I became wiser, I decided I had to have at least one large art Marvel Silver Age piece, ideally a splash. The choice came to this fantastic splash from the first Daredevil issue penciled by Gene Colan. The piece is truly amazing in person, because of the massively large image of Daredevil springing to action. I absolutely love the very initial take Gene Colan had on Daredevil. At that point, his style already had the distinctive, elusive dynamic twist that would accompany Daredevil for the next 100 issues or so. Yet, in those initial issues, there was a visible influence by John Romita (see Daredevil's face) and dare I say Wally Wood, with the thick black filling of shadows on Daredevil's recently introduced red costume. And Stan Lee's dialogue on the splash emanates the optimism and enthusiasm that is so typical of the late '60s. Go ahead, Matt, spring into action with such great attitude. The taxing tests that the likes of Miller, Nocenti and Bendis will throw at you are still many many years away. For the moment, it is just wonderful magic of Marvel's early years! Social/Sharing |

Sincere congrats on an outstanding Colan DD example! Such a dynamic shot and that surrounding lettering really rounds out the image! Good call on the Romita/Wood influence - I totally agree. This beaut must be a sight in person!

What a great page ... and even cooler that it is large art. Yet to get my first large art piece - this is very motivating! Congrats!

Super impressive silver-age splash page by Colan, congrats! I love Stan’s enthusiastic dialog too, but how does DD say all that during the split second it takes him to burst through the door? :)

As far as I remember, this was the first Colan/DD splash that floored me. It still does!
