DescriptionThe "Defender for a Day" storyline bookended the fantastic first early run of the title. Such great storylines and characters, with a twist towards the absurd and the social satyre that made the book standout. Sal Buscema drew many of those issues, aided by a plethora of different inkers. The strength of the book came also from the interplay between "A", powerhouse characters such as Doc Strange, the Hulk and Namor, with characters with less pedigree that however showed a lot of humanity and weaknesses. This page focuses on two such characters, Valkyrie and Nighthawk. The page features yet again Buscema's storytelling ability, with the dramating sequence of Valkyrie's close-ups at the top drawing the viewer's attention right away. I am not a fan of Perlin as a penciler, but he does a pretty good job here, guided by Sal's precise layouts. Social/Sharing |

A team in turmoil! That's the great thing about Marvel. The characters, though heroically taking on outer threats, often faced their own inner demons. This is great storytelling by Buscema and Perlin. Love those close-ups of Valkyrie.

Jack of Hearts is a good indicator of how precise the artwork was pencilled by Sal. In this you can see he cut no corners in this impassioned page from both Valkyrie and Nighthawk.

Sal Buscema's art was a big part of my youth in comics. Just loved the guy's work and this is a fine example of why. Very nice figure work in panels four and five. ...And anytime the Falcon appears (even briefly) it is a great page!
Congratulations on a cool addition to your collection and thanks for sharing it here with us Carlo.

What a great page. I'm a big Jack of Hearts fan so I was immediately drawn to that bottom left panel.

Terrific Defenders page by Sal Buscema and Don Perlin! I often found post-battle pages like this one more compelling than the battle pages because these show the true character of the team members. Great pick-up!

Nice story page, with a trademark Sal 3 character panel sequence in the top tier. Great storyline with fantastic dialogue here.
