DescriptionBack in 2012, Houston's Comicpalooza convention had Howard Chaykin as a guest. I'd read and enjoyed Howard's work from the '70s and early 80s - basically, Ironwolf, Cody Starbuck, Scorpion, Dominic Fortune (who is Scorpion), and American Flagg. In all of those, I felt that there was a connection that could be made, i.e., they were the same hero. Perhaps, I thought, they are a version of Joseph Campbell's Hero of a Thousand Faces or Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion. I've never asked Howard directly about how much influence each incarnation had on the latter ones. I probably should. Anyway, I enjoyed them all, but Ironwolf had the greatest appeal. Back to the 2012 convention, I asked Howard about a commission of Ironwolf and he agreed. He provided contact information. I was really new at comic art collecting and somewhat broke so I didn't follow-up though we would discuss it on occasion at other comic conventions. Finally, at the 2022 Baltimore Comic Con, I asked again and he again agreed. The deal was painless - no money until the work was finished and I had a scan. After the show, I reached out with a summary of what I wanted - basically Ironwolf and his ship. Howard agreed and said he would be in touch shortly. It took him a little longer than he hoped, but he wrote to me to let me know. That was a first! :) I'm very pleased with the result. Social/Sharing |

Alex, my friend, you on't waste any time do you? 2023 is not even 24 hours old and here you are with the first new art post of the year. Many congrats as I have always been a big Chaykin fan. Not only of his art, butof the man himself. Great artist and extremely interesting man. Love the great detail Howard added to this Ironwolf cover. Now, you want a real challenge? Get Howard to do a Sugar and Spike meet Reuben Flagg cover!

A piece for the vault! Whenever Chaykin revisits one of his own favorites, you can see in the art the spark of inspiration he had when it was first created. For Iron Wolf, it was 50 years ago when he made his debut and Chaykin has plenty still to offer for this character.
