DescriptionTA- DAAAAAAA!!!!The finished painting! I addressed the jaguar's gaze by painting in a butterfly at the last minute. It solves the problem without being too distracting, and also gives the cat a little personality at the same time. I draped a couple more vines round the top and had earlier added a couple of hanging vines in the space behind the tree branch on the right and the massive tree faded into the background to add another layer to the piece. Jungles are so dense that I could have kept doing that forever.I so had to resist the urge to add a monkey or two or a snake, but that steps into the realm of overworking an idea. You have to know when to stop. I STILL wanna add that damn monkey, though! LOL I love the way this piece came out, though there are things I would have done differently under other circumstances. For one, I would have loved to mist out and obscur each successive layer, to really give the impression of a humid, wet tropical environment, but that probably wouldn't pop out on a comic rack, I chose to stay commercial instead of going "artistic". LOL This is easily one of my favorite pieces I've ever done. 18"x28" Social/Sharing |

Wow Joe, you have done some of your best work on this one. I think you captured the jungle girl genre well while keeping a bit more of a modern look to it.

Good Lord, Joe this is beautiful, though it could use a monkey :) serious, I was in love with the prelim of this. Now that I've seen the final, I have to go curl up in the corner and weep with joy.

HO-LY SMOKES! Gotta be one of the most beautiful paintings in the history of mankind. I own a copy of Joe's book of paintings based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' characters, which is filled with awesome painting after awesome painting, but this is at a whole new level. Dang! I am dumbstruck. Joe, my compliments for expanding your already impressive talents into the stratosphere. With this painting, you have set the bar unreachably high for the rest of us!

Great painting however a slight perspective problem with the butterfly. It should be smaller given the direction of the jaguar's gaze. Keep up the good work!

First off, thanks. I saw about this tutorial over on the Frank Cho board and pulled it to my computer to look over it in a more leisure time. Finally, I was able to today. The slow building up through layers is a technique I've read about but this demonstration has convinced me to try the technique on my next ( or current ) painting. The masking fluid idea is a godsend since I often have to redraw upon the latest opaque layer with a piece of chalk. I can see that the whole process takes quite a while...patience, patience...and that is why some of my painting have a very rough finish to them. One other question: my wife mentions that I have some difficulty with the human figure and I agree with her. Is there a book or tutorial that you know of that could point me in the right direction for better paintings with figures involved? Thank you and thanks in advance, Keith

extremely impressive and informative. i'd have done the mist with my airbrush, i've seen you do background elements with one before, to throw something into soft focus. the hot sun burning away a recent rain (hey, rain forest people!) would leave some nice steam/mist. but then you'd have to put lingering raindrops on leaves etc.
