Description

I'm posting this in honor of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther run finale released this week. To be clear I have only read the first half of it and didn't get past of the first Wakanda in space arc. What I read I found « ok » and completely not living to the huge hype Marvel orchestrated once he came on board to write the character. You can't fault the artists who did a great job on the series though.

This is the Heroes Reborn event variant for which Carlos drew many covers. This one is clearly one of the best he produced and I had to have it despite already owning a Pacheco BP variant from this run.

The Chadwick Boseman likenesses are a nice touch and I really like the resolve on his face. We have T'Chala in his Ronin guise here. The Wakanda backgrounds are also very nicely rendered. I absolutely love Carlos' use of crosshatching here, especially on the statue.

So, with two first issues covers from that run (by Pascual Ferry and Skottie Young), another one by Carlos and this one to issue 25 caping the run, I'm good for while ;)

For those wondering, this is not a prelim but the actual definitive piece produced by Carlos before it was inked on blue lines (see additional picture below), a process I truly do not care about (unless I get both for the same price and maybe not even then). So, this is the only piece worth having regarding this cover as far as I'm concerned.

That look means that something about to go down!  Pacheco galvanized all influences of the character's past to distill it in his Black Panther.  The stance taken here symbolizes that he has been conditioned by the past for the never ending fight which is to come!

It's almost disorienting to see T'Challa standing in front of Wakanda, but putting on the Ronin outfit. I'm gonna have to read the comic to see what's up with that, even if you only gave it a meh. This is a lovely cover. Those pencils don't even really need inks, and I'm with you on always preferring pencils. Nice score. Congrats!

Okay, I really can't say anything that Marcus didn't already say very eloquently. But woe betide him if he continues to beat me to the punch and always leave comments ahead of me!

This piece is very solidly drawn. I really like the solid structure of the BP figure. This IS just done in tight pencils though, right? Because your additional image states that this piece was pencilled and inked, but also says it was inked on a separate board.

Ok it's on. Marcus and Rueben 3 O'Clock at the swings. I'm taking bets. Laying 2:1 odds juts because I seen Ruben on Live and he is a sports guy and haven't seen Marcus yet. But if Marcus shows up built like Hulk Hogan from the 80s then all bets are off. All I say if he does show up looking like that, go for ankles man, go for the ankles.

You're such an instigator.  I love it!

The piece is mixed media, most of which is pencil & ink. But I detect some markers, probably ballpoint (not 100% sure) and white out obviously. What the second images says is that this was blue lined as such and then inked, probably to give it a more polished look for publication. But my interest is only in Pacheco and it obviously stands on its own as such despite the "sketchy" look.

Great image!  Unique it that you've BP in Ronin garb AND unmasked.  Cool, too, that he channelled Boseman there - RIP.  Congrats, F!
