Artwork Details

DescriptionUPDATE..by popular demand.. I have added a gallery of 300 DPI 100% Giant Scans of sections of this piece to show detail here..Before I say anything else I have to thank Ruben Azcona of www.comicbookartgallery.com for being responsible for making this piece possible. Let me tell you in no uncertain terms there was no way I would have this piece today without Ruben's assitance and professionalism. Ok...on to the art.. A little used and oft misunderstood Marvel Comics villain in the 1980's was Nightmare. Doomed with a bad haircut back in the day, he did not have the same impact that his powers did portend. Well, Andy Brase fixed all that..AND HOW!. Here you have the Marvel Heroes Nightmare did have a chance to face off against in comics. Hulk, Dr.Strange, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and providing the torch within his wicked realm....the head of Ghost Rider. Take a few minutes and drink in the details in this piece. A sincerely twisted lair, part hell-raiser, part Cthulu, and all nightmare. Eyes peek out of the darkness, and vile creatures crawl along the ground and walls and swim behind his head. I wish you could see this piece in person all the fine details to the rings on his fingers, laces on his boots, strands of his hair, the lines in the brick work, and a thousand other fine line aspects no scan could ever show. This piece really floored me.....I know it's mine, and I know it's bad form to say....but Andy really created a masterpiece of pencil and ink here. Social/Sharing |

WOW ! I thought Brase's Hellboy and Wolverine pieces could be seen as "definitive" looks for those characters, but with this piece I truly believe Brase has outdone himself! In my eyes, the best thing about this piece is that Brase has taken a second or third rate character in Nightmare, who has always looked pretty goofy and clown-like despite his name, and with a combination of his own realistic illustrative style and a costume redesign has with one single image transformed him into a character who is truly terrifying looking and for the very first time since he was created and first appeared back in the 1960's, befitting of the name Nightmare! Although I've always cringed whenever Nightmare would appear as the main villain in a story, I can honestly say that by using this piece as a 'template', in the hands of a great writer/artist team he could become a 1st rate villain. Awesome !

Get 'em while you can--I don't know how old Brase is, but his eyeballs will surely explode at an early age if he keeps this kind of work up!

A textbook example of the "not phoned in" school of cartooning! Brase's passion for his work shines through... I hope we don't lose him to Hollywood or commercial art!

Amazing ! Andy's work stands right up there with Wrightson for being some of the scariest looking art out there ! He should be doing a horror comic.

Ba..ga..I mean..just......how did you......Wow! Andy truly outdid himself here. You are such a lucky guy to have this. And what a perfect choice for Andy to do Nightmare. I'm just......speechless.

I don't think I've ever felt that I could use the word "Nightmare-ish" as a compliment, but in this case, no other word suffices. Jaw-droppingly good!
