Description

This fabulous drawing was still in the possession of the artist's estate until 2008, 57 years after Hank Porter died. It is one of Porter's finest compositions and is as finely rendered as the very best drawings by any of the three primary publicity artists employed by the Disney Studio in the 1930s. In my opinion this is one of the three or four best original drawings for a Disney poster that is known to exist. I would also say, while recognizing the folly of making such bold statements, that this is the finest drawing of Goofy that was ever made. The design was also used for the cover of a Mickey Mouse Magazine and, more recently, for a Disney Snow Globe.

A typical visit to Collectors Book Store in the late 1970s began with me entering through the back door, often first encountering Howard Lwery laying out items for the next auction or photographing such items. After passing into the main floor area of the store, past a wall of boxes of Silver age comics whichblocked off the back area and the ground floor bank vault, I would usually find Leonard Brown seated at his small metal desk, with a chair adjacent to it, just waiting for me to sit and spend the rest of the afternoon talkng with Mr. Brown!
