Description

Probably best known among fans for being one of the original Mad Magazine artists and for his EC work, Jack Davis was, at one point, the highest paid illustrator in the world. Reliable, versatile, prolific, and with an engaging distinct style he had what it took to appeal to just about everyone, comics, book publishers, specialty houses and, most importantly for his financial situation, advertisers. He designed the Raid Bug and, in 1989 did the art for a 25 cent US Postage stamp. It featured letter carriers, one of which is distinctly Jack Davis himself. He is still alive as of this writing and presumably still working.

Davis did a large number of pieces for the Topps company, the makers of trading cards. This is one from a 1962 set of Topps "Foldees". Though Topps did not claim Davis as the artist in the Ebay auction for this, the other pieces from the set that I have seen are specifically attributed to him and the style is quite distinctive. I have no idea what the punchline is. The large scan is for detail, the small scan is the actual size of the piece. It was apparently drawn so as to not to need reduction for printing.

I am happy someone finally did comment on this piece. CAF people don't comment very much. My gallery has well in excess of a million impressions and undoubtedly less than half as many comments as pieces.
