Meet my grail. A Mike Mignola page. Nobody can do graphic storytelling like mr Mike does, or only the all-time greatest might come close. His covers and pin-ups will have Mignola be quite a name as well, 'though I'll be reserving such for a grail of it's own I guess.

His work delivering such grand imagery, rendered into essentials, in astute and enticing sequencing, allowing for rich mood and intricate pacing. Having everything become its own thing, time and time again, so vividly and so uniquely. Almost like something having actually been devised up by quaint magical leprechauns. Which would of course be cheating.

Hellboy being Mike Mignola's critically acclaimed creator-owned title in comics. A 'blue collar' demonic paranormal investigator, who habitually keeps his horns sawed down to stubs, wearing a trenchcoat with a back-split accommodating his tale, a gunbelt full of stuff, plus his big stone Right Hand of Doom.

A comic character which Mignola dreamed up for being his first-ever fully own thing, for allowing him to work on what he likes to be doing: buff bulky monster fights. Add to that some dark folkloric realism, some ghostly or horrific mystery, a little pulpy cootiness, presented in the popular-iconic comic form. And there we have it.

For me this page shows a lot of all of that: Hellboy landing a critical blow to a big bulky monster, speakingly even (which is another of Mignola's major fortes: striking sound-effect lettering and dialogue), with sending the dislodged evil itself like a cooty critter back into its pit. Having an almost autobiographical-like bald and not tall creator sink into the hold of his caretaker, going: "NOO! It's all I've got... It's all I have left." Showing the sculpted minotaurean brute hurtingly stagger into its demise. That is what I call buff.
