Description

Jann of the Jungle could be said to be inspired by Tarzan, Shanna, Cave Girl and a whole host of jungle characters where a white European/American is born and raised in the jungle to live with the animals and natives to become a legend.

Jann first appeared in Jungle Tales #1 (Sept 1954), an anthology comic published by Atlas which also had features of other jungle girls like Lorna the Jungle Girl and Leopard Girl. The first time you see Jann, she is fighting a lion armed only with a knife. But then you learn that she is really Jane Hastings, a stunt-double for Eva Dawn who is the star of a jungle action movie. Jane's heroics impressed the natives and was hailed as Jann, a legendary white jungle queen type who had lived in the area several generations ago until she got romantically involved with an outsider and left them. It is later revealed that the original Jann had been Jane's grandmother. At the end of her "origin story" Jane decides to stay in the jungle and assumes her role as "Jann" accompanied by Pat Mahoney, the director who also stayed and became a romantic interest in the stories.

Eventually, Jungle Tales became Jann of the Jungle with issue 8 (Nov 1955) although it remained an anthology comic. These issues featured lots of impressive art with stories by such artists as Jay Scott Pike, Al Hartley, Don Heck, and Al Williamson here inked by long-time friend Ralph Mayo. Like a lot of titles in the 1950s, it became a victim of the Comics Code censorship and declining sales; its final issue was #17 (June 1957).

This is the final page of the story "Jungle Vengeance" showing Jann fighting a leopard and capturing a man intent on shooting the animal. In the end, Jann relaxes by a tree while Pat brags about getting a photo of the man she captured.

Anyone that knows me even a little knows how much I love Al's art... and paid way to much to get this one.

Thanks, Mark, but not all that early; this was done after Al left EC.

I just meant early in terms of his life, as that man worked well into the 1990s.  But yes, by no means his "earliest" work.  Al was a true gent, one of the nicest men I ever interacted with.  I love seeing this page, definitely some of his rarer work.
