Description

Back in the day, I used to own what was my favourite Hulk splash from the Keown run. That was Hulk #372 p.15. That particular splash had been completed by Dale after two previous tries, both of which were interesting but for various reasons needed to be improved upon and he did finally get it right with the 3rd and final version.

At the time I owned that published splash, the Hulk #369 p.14 splash featuring a back shot of the Hulk as he rises from the rubble, didn't make my want list. However, in those days I wasn't aware that the published Hulk #369 p.14 splash was also achieved only after at least one previous try by Keown, and that is the page you see here.

I don't know where my former Hulk #372 splash ended up, and I don't see it here on CAF, but I'm really thrilled to own this one and unpublished or not, I actually like this Hulk illustration even more than the one on the #372 splash, for two particular reasons. First and foremost, because while I've always loved the Keown run, that was the era in which editors insisted that all the artists draw the Hulk with a pin head. Meaning, a ridiculously tiny head as compared to the rest of his body, in an effort to make the body appear even bigger than it already does. I really hated that. This version of the splash was drawn with a normally proportioned head, which I love. The second reason I like this image even more than the one on the Hulk #372 splash is because although I usually prefer finished art (inked), I love that Keown added tonal shading to the pencils, making the piece look more finished and intended for publication. Keown even wrote in a little joke about the smudging technique on the bottom border!

Totally agree, published or not, this is outstanding Keown Hulk example.  The pose, musculature, and the tonal work is top notch.  Also a big bonus to have that storytelling up top!  Congrats, man!

Oh, that is SOOOOO much better than the published version.  No contest.  And, thank goodness Keown didn't adhere to that 'pinhead Hulk' gestalt.

Incredible (pun intended) splash by Keown.  The tonal shading really adds dimension to it but,the thing I like the most is that it actually looks like the Hulk and not a handsome guy with a big, musular body.  No offense to Gary Frank, who is an amazing artist but, his Hulk was just too pretty.  The Hulk is supposed to be menacing, dangerous, grotesque...in short, a monster.  And, he looks that way here.  Excellen acquisition, congrats!

There's just a pure and unmatched energy to Keown's un-inked pencils.  Shooting direct from pencils wasn't as commonplace back then as it is today, but I sure wish it were.  By the way, the #372 spash was page 20, not page 15.  And I used to own one version of it.  There were some questions regarding authenticity (which McLeod later confirmed) so I got rid of it.

Yup, this would've printed like crap back then, no doubt. As for the page number, it's correct. I'm not counting ads.
