DescriptionHeavy Metal circa early 1984 changed my world. I was 13 going on 14 and first discovered the world of Moebius, Serpieri, Manara, Liberatore, Bilal, Druillet and so many other artists. Among the first things I recall was Manara's work on this particular series. The art was beautiful and the women were drawn unlike any other artist I had seen. In particular, there was a 4 or 5 page sequence in the bathroom that I recall even though I have not revisited this story in decades. This year at Angouleme there was a Manara exhibition and I saw two of my favorite pages there but they were from a private, anonymous collector and so I knew I would not likely be able to add those to my collection. Those 2 pages started me looking for the other two pages in that sequence. I had asked through friends who know Manara and he did not have any of these pages left and so when one showed up at Daniel Maghen's Auctions in October, I decided I was all in. The auction went a lot higher than it should have and higher than I wanted but I pushed for one more bid and won it. No regrets although it might have set a record for a Manara panel page sale but since I won't have to worry about selling it for decades, that is not an issue. It is a page from what I think is Manara's prime years and has a nostalgia factor that is off the charts for me and so I think the page has found the right collections to settle into. Maghen's auction house was easy to work with, I did phone bidding and picked up the piece in person on a visit to Paris.Social/Sharing |

Gorgeous page with incredible detail! I’ve always loved Manara’s work and the sensual way he draws women. Congratulations on finding a nostalgic piece Jeff!

Could not hope for a better example of Manara. He drew a sketch for me when I met him but I too am going to have to go all in someday and get a good page example. Congrats

A fantastic page, prime Manara era, and from a criminally underrated book. Nice work!
