Description

This was unexpected piece from a recent visit to Berlin. I met up with Carsten Laqua who many of you know as an art dealer. He had these two Caniff pieces he had just gotten. I love art like this and it was an easy decision when the price was fair. I believe I have seen this one printed and sent out like he did with other prints.

It is a really fun piece. Despite the success of Steve Canyon and his much longer run, people always associate Caniff with Terry and the Pirates even though it ran for about a 10 year with Caniff. The Dragonlady was arguably Caniff's greatest creation (at least I can argue it) and that was always what was missing from Canyon. Here is a play on that sentiment On the back of the art is a note from Shel Dorf saying the idea was his own. Shel worked as an assistant for Caniff for some time in addition to being instrumental in establishing early fandom in comics.

You don't often see Canyon and the Dragon Lady together. A very cool association.

Wow. These two pieces are so great, so drenched in the history of comics and fandom. And yes, the Dragon Lady is number one!

I'm a new Caniff convert, I read the Terry books this summer and am now immersed in volume 3 of Canyon. Canyon is good and by IDW's volume 2 it hits it's stride but for some reason Terry just resonates in a way Canyon does not.

I am eagerly looking froward to Hermes' Terry by Wunder volume 2. I sincerely hope they continue their publication of the post Caniff, Terry strips, the characters are just so appealing unlike comics these days.
