DescriptionMilton Caniff created Male Call as his contribution to the war effort and to keep the enlisted men's spirits up. These were drawn strictly for publication in military newspapers. It originally started out as an alternative Terry and Pirates strip prominently featuring Burma but when domestic newspapers complained, Caniff was forced to abandon that idea after only 14 episodes. Male Call was created as was the female lead, Miss Lace. Male Call ran from January 1943 to March 1946 for a total of 158 episodes which were printed weekly. These strips are extremely rare and coveted by collectors of Caniff like myself. How rare? In the 20 years I have been looking and talking to collectors I am aware of 6 in private collections including this one. I started this year with a trip to a veteran Caniff collectors collection and came away with the goal of finding a truly top tier Caniff piece for my collection. I think this fits the bill. The piece arrived here from Italy and the reality of it is just sinking in.Placed 2nd in best Strip Art for 2020. Social/Sharing |
