Description

This 1938 Terry and the Pirates features the main quartet of characters: Pat, Terry, Connie, and Big Stoop. Dated June 28, 1938, the strip is from the Hunter Yurk storyline, where Burma and the gang go from one hot frying pan into another. In this case, Pat, Terry, Connie, and Big Stoop were all trapped by Yurk, who had bashed Pat Ryan on the skull, hard enough to cause amnesia of sorts. Ryan had just been knocked back to his senses right before this strip, and is coming out of his daze.

The period covering 1938 through 1941 is my favorite for Caniff. His total approach, from brush work to storytelling, was hitting on all cylinders. The lovely blue wash, used as an indication for the Benday shading, is a wonderful bonus on strips from this period.

Ah, The blue green wash period. Lovely. You know, Milt used several shades of blue over the years, and now you must collect them all. The lighter blue/lavender on the earlier Normandy storyline is particularly nice :)
