DescriptionI read author John Coates' excellent biography Don Heck: A Work of Art this summer, and resolved to find a nice example of Don rendering his co-creation, the Black Widow. This ignores the fact that I already have some nice examples of Don rendering his co-creation, the Black Widow, but hey... that's collecting. Also, if there's a specific number of Bill Everett inked Black Widow pages that equals "enough" I sure haven't reached it yet.I've always liked Heck's work, but Coates' fine book really makes me appreciate him even more. Check out Don's Natasha in panel 9: if that portrait was any more Heckish, Gary Groth would goad Harlan Ellison into publicly humiliating it in print. Also unique to this page is the grimly realistic panel 8, in which Natasha kicks the henchman so hard she separates his torso from his pelvis... mercifully censored for print (see additional images). The Black Widow will return in My Budget Is Not Enough... Social/Sharing |

Great write-up, and even greater page. Everett's style is evident in every panel. Now I really want to buy that Don Heck book. Big congrats on a sweet piece of art!

Don Heck was very stylish but was greatly enhanced by a good inker.

The middle panel makes the page- imagine though, what life would be like if Colletta had inked AA instead of Everett? You might not have to eat canned beans. Or you might be collecting Thundra appearances...

Hah! The only one who inked Heck as good as Everett was Wally Wood...

If there was a prize for "Best description of 2015," this would be a contender. But only a contender mind you...just so you don't rest on your laurels and all that.
