DescriptionBernie Wrightson certainly needs no introduction to anyone reading this. And, an attempt to encapsulate his career or even just contextualize this page against the backdrop of his involvement in creating and giving life to the character of Swamp Thing would just diminish the art. I’m just a collector who, while deeply appreciative of the artistic skills of others, does not have a creative bone in his body. So, I looked around at what actual creators had to say about Bernie when he passed away in March of 2017 at the age of 68. I figured one of their voices, at a time of trying to capture the essence of someone, might be the best way to speak to who Wrightson was as a creator. Well, the words spoken about him were really wonderful – folks spoke of his artistic gifts, his inspiration to so many other artists, his general genius, his commitment to his craft and his defining of horror to a generation of comic readers. But, to me, it was Mike Mignola who captured Bernie Wrightson best with a very simple sentence – ‘Everything Bernie did had soul.’ No matter what you do for a living, there might not be a higher compliment. I’ll leave it at that and let you enjoy some art from the ‘Monster on the Moors’ story from Swamp Thing #4. Thanks, Rob! Social/Sharing |

His rendering gets so much attention, but as this page demonstrates, his pacing and staging was world class.
