Description

Here is a cool illustration that comes in a trade deal with my good friend Brett B. Brett has a great eye and taste for art and has introduced me and my collection to new artists. Although I know Cady from his work on Peter Rabbit comic strip, he started as an illustrator for the Brooklyn Eagle at the age of 18. His first comic series started in 1912 and it wasn't until 1920 that he adapted Peter Rabbit for comic strips and was hugely successful. This piece is from 1908 so almost 115 years old! It is remarkably great shape and it is my goal as its caretaker to keep it that way so that it looks this good at 215 years of age. See below for scan of published page and the magazine it came it which was a nice bonus from Brett.

This high level of illustrative art for children during that time period has that distinct charm and delight reflective of the time period. The subject matter and art is a pure expression of whimsy and imagination!

Fun pick up! Love the rendering. Wonder if this artist inspired David Peterson on Mouse Guard in any way. Congrats!
