Description

I picked up this Phil Noto prelim sketch (for a color commission Phil drew in 2004) from art rep supreme Terry Maltos. Bob "The Ink King" Almond transformed Phil's sparse pencils into a finished work of beauty. Witness the heroic strength of Thundarr; the sensuous mystery of Princess Ariel; and the primal Wookieeness of Ookla the Mok (named for a certain Southern California university... think initials).

For you kids too young to remember Thundarr and friends, they starred in a Hanna-Barbera animated TV series of the early 1980s, created by comics scribe Steve (Howard the Duck) Gerber and designed by the legendary Alex (Space Ghost) Toth. See? History is good for you!

DIdn't the great Jack Kirby himself do some artwork for the Thundarr series? This is an awesome piece produced by some incredible talents, and Bob really took it to the next level.

As I understand it, Toth did the initial design work, including the three primary characters and the overall look and feel. He departed early in production and was replaced by Kirby, who designed all of the other characters seen throughout the series.

I came a bit too early for Thundarr to be one of my shows but my younger brother was a huge fan! Really great idea to have Bob handle Noto.
