DescriptionMy older cousin was a huge Muhammad Ali fan, and since he lived upstairs, it was only natural that I became one too. I grew up watching Ali take on all comers, and while he didn’t always win every fight, we knew that he would win in the end. People remember Ali for his personality, but many forget that, in his prime, he was an amazing boxer. I remember going to a movie theatre to watch him take on George Foreman in the “The Rumble in the Jungle” on pay per view. For all of you youngsters out there, that’s how pay per view used to work. No buttons on your remote. You actually went to a movie theatre to see the fight. One more unrelated point. Before he known for being the jolly guy selling grills, George Foreman was a strong, vicious, fearsome fighter. Ali should not have beaten Foreman – but he did. When “Superman vs. Muhammad Ali” came out, penciled by Neal Adams, with inks by Giordano and Austin, it was an unexpected collision of my interests, and it did not disappoint. The key battle with Ali against the Scrubb champion managed to match up to the Foreman fight pretty well, even down to the use of the “rope a dope” technique Ali pioneered. I’ve been looking for a nice page from this book, and a page focused on Ali was just too good to pass up.

Neal could make even larger-than-life icons appear superhuman (he drew the best Bruce Lee, too, even better than Gulacy). Another fantastic pickup!

This is what I consider Adams' last great work. I bought like 20 copies of it and when I started selling the extras off I priced them way above guide because I just thought it was worth more than it said. It didn't sell well reportedly because Ali lost the title before it came out but I'm not a sports fan and didn't know that at the time or obviously care.

Wowzer! I somehow overlooked this in the Heritage auction. An excellent page from a landmark book. Space aliens and Muhammad Ali? Penciled by Neal Adams? How can you go wrong?

While I can tell you what movies I've seen the most number of times, I probably couldn't do the same with comics. There were just so many that I read over and over again. But this book was certainly one of them! It all starts with Neal of course, my all time favorite comic artist. Plus of course the fact that it was a Treasury size book meant all that gorgeous artwork would be even bigger! And then of course there was my love for team-up stories. The fact that someone had the idea to team Superman with Ali blew my mind. I just couldn't wait to get into the story. I've had a lot of chances to buy pages from this book over the past 30 years, but to my great regret, never took advantage. Congrats on getting such a SUPER page from this classic story!

When I moved to Japan permanently, I traded just about my entire comics collection, including the treasuries, and there were a few I almost immediately regretted no longer having. So, when DC published the hardback, I paid a little extra and ordered mine from Neal's Continuity so that I could get an autographed copy of it because, really, there are few comics published during my childhood that could make me smile as much as that one. So, yeah, a big congrats (once again) on getting another great page for your collection.

This might be the best-drawn comicbook story of all-time.
