DescriptionAt last, my X-men grail: a fantastic Byrne X-Men #128 battle page with Phoenix and Wolverine! Classic bottom panel of Wolverine slashing looks remarkably similar to the iconic X-Men #133 cover (published 5 months later):![]() Another panel evokes Wolverine's legendary Hellfire Club rampage, attacking from above...he also professes his love for Jean Grey, possibly for the first time in comics. At center, a chilling "near death experience" of Phoenix recalls her famous Death pose from issue #137. Another panel shows Phoenix unleashing her psychic blast! Six amazing panels show why I've always loved X-Men comics-- and Byrne/Austin art in particular-- making this a grail-worthy page for me. Special thanks to David O for letting this beauty go. Thanks for looking! Social/Sharing |

A great page from the John Byrne and Terry Austin X-MEN run is certainly a grail, and as you so rightly point out, each panel is a winner. Well done Dino, I look forward to what's going to be next in your amazing collection.

Grail, indeed! I remember getting this book at my birthday party. Couldn't wait for the party to end and everyone to go home so I could sink into the big, final battle with Proteus. Awesome page!!!

I can't believe I haven't commented on this page. Maybe I thought, "Oh, you've already got 50-plus comments so... what's the point?" Well, the point is, some pages are just too good to let them go unremarked. For all the reasons already cited (and probably a few more), this is one of those. Congrats!

Almost seven years has passed now since you first posted this incredible page. Looking through all the posted comments, I see two missing collectors who have not posted. I have corrected one of those glaring errors right now. However, there is anothe prominent CAF collector who is trying to put this book back together if he can. I do not see a post from him. Maybe this post will spur him on to re-consider.

Thanks PR, I appreciate the comment. Like you, the other collector is fortunate to own several pages and expressed interest if I ever decide to sell. We've had great conversations about my page and our hobby. BTW, I'm in complete awe of your amazing Byrne X-Men pages and just feel lucky to have one page from this book that brings me joy and happy memories.

A fantastic page, from this severely underrappreciated Proteus Saga! I got to read the Byrne X-Men run is pieces, whenever I'd buy them as wall books when I began to earn a bit of money. Understandably, I got the Phoenix Saga and read those first and was enamored by them. As it turns out, the Proteus Saga never sounded like it would appeal to me very much so I saved those issues for last. When all was said and done, I have to honestly say all these years later that they may have been my favourite issues of the run!

You know when you really break down this page it may be in the top ten of the whole run. Every panel is killer, focusing on the book's most sought after characters Wolverine and Pheonix. You have heroes inflicting major damage on Proteus ( an newly minted villain from the minds of great Byrne/Claremont creative team). The bottom Wolverine panel is the type of imagery that really cements him as the most badass character in comics, and at the time, unlike any other character in comics. Would there be a Frank Miller Dark Knight without the influence of Wolverine? All of this smack down in the peak of their historic Byrne run. You have a magnificent piece of art and a piece of comic art history!
