I mentioned this once to one. He said give me your address. About three weeks later. I recieved a big thick fed-ex envelope. I got 80 plus sheets in the mail. The paper used in the late 70's early 80's at Marvel! I'm using it for a secret project. All the old pros I know agree with your statement as do I.

I have a mess of Kirby art--but no pencils. This is outstanding. Seeing these helps a person begin to understand Jack's thought process and method. So good.

Beautiful and historic. It's obviously an update to the Golden Age Manhunter from Adventure Comics #73, which was Simon and Kirby's first cover for DC.In my opinion, that is the nicest golden age cover from that run (reason I bought the Mile High years back!).

I think if I was Carmine at the time, I might have picked this up for a Showcase spot. But I would have Jack do breakdowns and some other artist do finishes. Then I'd commision Boris to do painted covers for the first 6 issues, ala Sea Devils. Jack would write it with an editor to review it before publication.
I doubt if Jack would have agreed to any of this, however.

Haha! Kirby would have bolted-- rightly so!

Remember that Jack wanted to be editor and writer of his Fourth World material and let other artists draw the books. But Carmine wouldn't let him. So I think Jack would have accepted doing breakdowns. I also think Jack would have loved Boris covers and a chance to meet Boris in person. And DC could afford the young Boris at that time. But having an editor to shape up Jack's writing would have caused Jack to bolt, even though Steinbeck and Hemmingway themselves had editors by comparison!! Even Stan needed an editor. But, at that time in his career, I don't think Jack would have accepted it.
Carmine and DC hired Jack in the hopes of destroying Marvel, not to give Jack the creative and editorial control he thought he was getting. What a terrible business decision. I love everything Carmine to this day, but this business decision was not his finest hour.

All accurate, but though the books were not as successful as hoped, I think Kirby-helmed-not-Kirby-drawn books would not live in our memories as they have.

Very true. But Jack, at his core, wanted to make sales. Recall that he tried to lure Romita to work for him. I think too that Wood would have loved to ink over Jack breakdowns. Wood begged Carmine to be a part of Jack's new line. Imagine New Gods #1 with Jack breakdowns inked by Wood and not Vince. Talk about memorable. And a Boris cover from Jack sketches. Sales would have been through the roof!! And Stan would have turned ashen pale when he saw that New Gods first issue. The battle Carmine wanted would have been on!!

Just a note on my Wally Wood point. Check out the inks Wood supplied over Gene Colan in Captain America #127. Talk about a correct interpretation of Colan pencils! Now imagine Wood on New Gods over Jack. And Wood begged Carmine to at least get one book in the new Kirby line.
No.
A crucial mistake by Carmine. A damn shame....
