Description

The cartoon magazine Matti Meikalainen was the first of its kind in Finland to switch to photo-engraving, enabling drawings made on paper to be reproduced. Prior to that, cartoons were done as wood engravings. The magazine made the switch in the beginning of 1894 when a new editor/owner Aapo Kohonen took it over. One of the two first pen and ink artists to appear was pen-name "Api". Researchers have made the assumption that this would've been Kohonen himself.
This is the cartoon for issue 3/1895 and features on the left the cartoon alter ego of the magazine itself, sort of like Mr. Punch or Alfred E. Neuman.
The caricatures are of two socialist journalists, A. B. Makela (alias Kaapro Jaaskelainen) and J. A. Lyly. Makela later emigrated to Canada to join the attempted socialist utopian society Sointula outside Vancouver. Lyly was the first PhD to write a dissertation on Philosophy in Finnish, hence the doctoral top hat in the cartoon. He was later deported and ended up committing suicide in Berlin.
