They were all in a thin cardboard envelope, with no padding or added support... and not only that, but the receipt of each cartoon had been STAPLED on the art! Truly my worst shipping experience ever...
I was hoping I could get some answers from seeing the original (as in "how the heck does he do it") – but no! It's one of those cases where seeing the original almost just adds on to the mystery. All the other Davis originals I've seen have been quite large, the pen and brush work has been big and bold. This, however, is very small, close in size to the published page. So not only is the linework perfect – just look at the smooth transition of values on the tall bald guy's coat, and then contrast that with the young man's coat on the right where the hatching ALSO beautifully describes the texture of the cloth – it's also executed at an intricate scale that almost seems like it shouldn't be humanly possible.
I now added some close-ups of the corrections. So many paste-ups, it's almost like collage!
A great page! I like the detail and the "unmotivated lighting" in the last panel. I think the kind of touches only Don Rosa could provide.
Oooh, congrats! I remember seeing one of these on ebay about 15 years ago, regret passing on it...
I'll be posting a SECOND Feiffer Dancer strip in a few days, stay tuned!
I felt funny about getting it... "am I really buying someone's post-it note?" But that was almost 20 years ago and I haven't regretted it!
You might be thinking of Ralph Steadman, I have a couple of pieces by him as well: https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=179873
but Searle did a lot of magazine work as well, and was the OG creator of this style which became very popular with illustrators and editorial cartoonists.
A truly iconic page! Wow! Congratulations!
Minulla on kolme sivua häneltä (ja puolikas), mutta kansikuvaa en ole aiemmin nähnyt.
My favorite of Drew's Indy book covers! Big congrats!
And just judging from this page, she must be significant to the story later. I haven't read it, but I heavily suspect it: in the background, but also placed right there in the middle of the panel.
Congratulations! I was watching this one closely, too.
What has already been said: an iconic piece of pop culture history. The Norman Rockwell for our generation.
How did Spielberg or Lucas let this one slip past! Huge congrats on being able to get this.
Oh man, I SAW this on ebay way back when and couldn't believe it was real! :-D Lucky you!
Wooow, what an awesome acquisition, talk about getting a grail! Huge congratulations.
Wow! For me this is one of the most memorable Hagar the Horrible strips!
So you got it... congrats! I had to "settle" for the strip ghosted by Vern Greene: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1524114
"You have chosen wisely"
These first pages with lots of small panels are my favorite part of the series. And this is a great one, with very iconic BWS touches all over. This is a great find!
Great story, a very fitting piece for your collection. Congrats!
I love that fact that in his old age, the artist has started to look a lot like the kid in the chair! :-D
Wow. What a great story, and a great page!
