Description

Karate Kid vs. Cable by Phillip Sevy and Jeremiah Skipper

I'm pretty sure that the first time I saw Phillip Sevy's art was on Twitter. I think that he was drawing Tomb Raider at the time, and that book looked fantastic. I started following Phillip's work and watching his skills grow. And now a few years later I got to read Triage, a terrific comic that he wrote and drew, establishing himself as an incredible comics creator who can write, draw and color. Anywho, I saw that he was taking commissions and asked Phillip to contribute to my "Karate Kid vs." collection. I gave Phillip a few opponents to choose from, and I was sure to include Cable, who I know Phillip is a huge fan of. And of course he chose the Askani'son! Not too long after, Phillip delivered this amazing piece to me! I love that Phillip's telling the story of the fight here, with Cable having possibly threatened Karate Kid with his Psimitar, and Karate Kid showing Cable exactly what he thinks of his weapon. But as we can see from the energy coming out of Nathan Summer's eye, he's about to use his powers in a counterattack against Val Armorr. I love it. I knew that Phillip would do a great job drawing Cable, and of course he did. And I was excited to see his rendition of Karate Kid, and he rocked it! I love the whole thing, from the action poses to Cable's techno-organic arm to the wrinkles in Karate Kid's costume to that small but very cool-looking background. Not long after I received this commission, I sent it over to the very talented Jeremiah Skipper. Jeremiah put some gorgeous colors on it that really make the piece pop! I really like what Jeremiah did with the lightning, the background and Cable's psychic energy. Anyway, big thanks to both Phillip and Jeremiah!

Well, I think Phillip did a really good job of showing how this fight would begin. Val Armorr is going to disarm Nathan Summers so quickly, Nate won't even know it's happening. But Cable is a great warrior, and he's going to fight back with everything he has once he realizes how formidable Karate Kid is. I think that Val will be able to resist all but Cable's most powerful telepathic attacks, but those telekinetic assaults will be a big problem.

If you like this piece then please do go buy some books featuring Phillip's work in either physical or digital format.
