Karate Kid vs. Superboy by Francis Manapul

Francis was the artist on Legion of Superheroes for a while, and therefore will always have a special place in my heart. He actually designed a new costume for the threeboot Karate Kid which was very similar to the Dave Cockrum design (that is my favorite), so that�s another reason for me to like him. Anyway, I�ve been following his art since his Legion run and his art continues to evolve in amazing ways. As soon as I saw that he would be at NOLA Con 2011 I knew that I would ask him for a Karate Kid commission. And he blew me away with this ink wash piece that I got to watch him draw. I love that he set the fight in the night sky, and personally I think it�s happening over the fields in Smallville. Maybe Kon-El asked Val to come back in time and teach him some mid-air martial arts? Well, whatever the case may be, I love it! HUGE thanks again to Francis for doing this commission for me!

Superboy has sparred with a Karate Kid before (the post-Zero Hour one), so he probably knows that he�s gonna be frustrated in this sparring match. The only thing Val may not expect is if Conner uses his tactile telekinesis in the fight. Not that it would help Conner much. But these two guys are allies so I fully expect Val to teach Conner a few moves after he humiliates him for a bit.

The sense of motion and impending impact are really well-conveyed in this commission by Francis. The moon has a unique look and feel that adds an additional element of interest. Nice one, Travis and Francis!
