DescriptionWell, it had to come to this: Brian Bolland joins my collection.Becoming a member of such an elite club was no easy task, and was a long time coming. However, as soon as I saw that this banger of an Eagle Comics cover was for sale, time was of the essence… It was this cover that got me into reading the Eagle reprints, and then to start to delve into back issues of the weekly Prog, igniting my curiosity about 2000AD thrills from before I started reading the weekly. It’s such a crazy, gonzo image, and absolutely classic Bolland at his Beefheart best. While Hitler tries to escape, mutant bounty hunter Johnny Alpha is distracted by an attack by what looks like a giant axe-wielding fanny, with arms for legs, all taking place in some kind of ruined Nazi landscape. As I found out inside the comic, this was John Wagner and Alan Grant’s ‘The Schicklgruber Grab’, with Johnny and Wulf kidnapping Hitler from his bunker in the ruins of Berlin in 1945. And the axe-wielding monster? That’s one of the Dervish-Dogs, tracking animals of rival Strontium Dogs Slabhead, Big Cynthia and Armstrong Jones. The Schicklgruber Grab appeared in Progs 182 - 188, and was of course drawn by Carlos Ezquerra: the Dervish-Dogs are a typical piece of his grungy Spanish design. How glorious to see the monstrous Spiro (“Get Alpha, yeh, yeh”), rendered by the hyper-detailed Bolland, the yin to Ezquerra’s Yang. But wait! There’s more; a lovely profile of Judge Dredd, Lawgiver at the ready, and Alan Moore’s juvenile delinquents, DR and Quinch. This cover has it all! 2000 A.D. Monthly featuring Judge Dredd, No.4 (Eagle Comics 6 Issue Mega-Series, July 1985). These stories from the UK comic, re-coloured and re-sized for the American market, published by IPC Magazines, printed in Canada, and sold in US comic stores. The majority of covers were by Brian, coloured by John Burns. The editor was Martin Landau, using his Titan imprint. Pen, ink, white-out on Frisk drawing paper 28.5 cms x 42 cms Reproduced on page 119 of David Roach's landmark Judge Dredd By Brian Bollard APEX EDITION (Rebellion 2022). Social/Sharing |

Amazing textures, bizarre and intriquing subject, great storytelling, perfect composition.... all are on display here. (Just a few of the reasons this guy was the best cover artist in comics for such a long stretch.)

Love it!!! This is one great Bolland cover - one of the early ones that got me hooked on 2000AD, Dredd, and Bolland as well. Well done.

I just realised Dredd and Nazis sort of go together.
