DescriptionDeath of the Endless is an immortal being of virtual omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence who has a floppy hat collection and a pair of goldfish for pets. She is both the end of life and a psychopomp who happens to be adorable. Having met you when you were born, she greets you again when you die and then cheerfully and perkily escorts you to the afterlife. When the universe ends, she'll be the one to make sure the place is tidy and lock the door behind her as she leaves.Oh, and once every 100 years or so, she takes a one-day sabbatical to become human. The last time this occurred was in York City in 1993 when she took the form of Didi, an eccentric, orphaned goth who, like Death, rocks a top hat and has a seemingly endless (sorry) supply of perkiness. Also, like someone else we all know and love, she is practically perfect in every way, and, for some reason, never has to pay money for anything she wants. Didi meets and becomes the Mary Poppins for a suicidal teen named Sexton, who then takes him on a New York adventure that she hopes will help him find a reason to live. Among other things, they run into a very upset Mad Hettie who has lost her heart, eat a hot dog on the street, take a taxi ride, go to a club, meet and talk to a pregnant Hazel, listen to Hazel's lover, Foxglove, play music (Hazel and Foxglove were characters from the "A Game of You" arc) and have a deadly encounter with a very unpleasant man called "the Eremite" (who is implied to be Mister E, albeit somewhat changed after Death made him walk home from the end of time for being mean to Tim Hunter in the original "Books of Magic" miniseries) and his equally unpleasant and not particularly bright minion, Theo. I've long wanted a page from the first Death mini, and I had almost given up on it happening. They were hard to come by and, when one did pop up, were quite expensive. However, as luck would have it, a person who had wanted to sell me this page, just happened also to know someone who might be interested in a pair of Sandman pages that were in my collection. Trades in this hobby, I've found, are not the easiest things to pull off when there are only two collectors involved, but, even though this one involved three collectors, we had things sorted out in a relatively short time. For my troubles, I got a pretty good page with memorable dialogue from one of my favorite miniseries by two artists, Chris Bachalo and Mark Buckingham, who were at the height of their Vertigo-era powers. They, like Death herself, were practically perfect in every way for this story. Cheers! Social/Sharing |

"I know everybody really well." :-) What a great pick-up! And as usual your write-up is as entertaining as the art itself. Thanks for sharing both.

What a wonderful page! The art, the dialogue, the history - all perfection. I enjoyed your interview on Ruben's channel recently. If it's any consolation, I always associate you with that PCR page when I am appreciating it.
